The Lowlands are the forgotten middle child of Scotch whisky regions. In 2005 there were only two operational distilleries, and the light and fruity style was seen as inferior compared to Speyside, Highland, or Islay malts. Thankfully there are Australian yogurt magnates to turn the tide. Today there are 18 operational Lowland distilleries, including Bladnoch which is owned by Aussie David Prior. Founded in 1817, Scotland’s southern-most distillery has been either closed or struggling to stay open for 200 years. Happily they now stand tall on stable ground, offering a solid range of NAS and numbered whiskies that showcase the uniquely spicy spirit. This 19-year-old is from old stock, aged exclusively in ex-Pedro Ximenez casks which impart a hue that can only be described as deep. Hopefully your experience follows suit.
Tasting Notes
By The Master of Malt
Pedro Ximénez is the star of the show for the 2022 release of Bladnoch's 19 Year Old. The Lowland single malt wasn't treated to just a finishing period in the classic sherry variety, it spent all 19 years slumbering in its rich, sticky-sweet loveliness. Expect to be sherry bombed.
Nose
Dried apricots, blackcurrant jam, and warming nutmeg emerge from delicate floral notes.
Palate
Dark liquorice sticks, red berries, peppery oak, and Manuka honey combine in a rich, thick palate.
Finish
Very long and a little drying.
