To paraphrase Mugatu: Japanese whisky, so hot right now. And with the looming crisis of Japanese aged stock, there is no better time to enjoy. Interestingly, Shinobu may not be affected by the shortage as most of their spirit is brought in from other distilleries, even those outside Japan. While the source remains a trade secret, we do know the sherry- and bourbon-cask matured spirits (50:50 grain to malt) are then blended and finished in a Mizunara oak cask which imparts that distinctly Japanese profile.
Tasting Notes
By The Master of Malt
Another top blended malt from Shinobu, this 15 year old expression is wonderfully honeyed, spicy and mouth-filling. Its flavour profile is thanks to an initial maturation in bourbon and sherry casks, followed by a finishing period in Japanese Mizunara oak.
Nose
Honeyed malt and blueberry muffin, with hints of tobacco and fresh espresso.
Palate
Crisp notes of lemon and apple lead into baking spice warmth, with oily malt in support.
Finish
Candied ginger and wood spice alongside orchard fruit.
