Many people assume the trope that there is a direct, positive correlation between age and quality of whisky. While simply not true, it doesn’t mean there isn’t great old whisky to be drank! Take this particular Glenrothes expression for example. At 18 years it’s the second oldest whisky they produce, maturing on the banks of the river Spey exclusively in sherry casks. Though colour can be misleading, with this dram it is more promise than trick.
Tasting Notes
By The Master of Malt
18 year old single malt from Glenrothes, released as part of the Soleo Collection. This series was named after the process of sun-drying grapes for the production of sherry in Jerez, and as such you should expect plenty of sherry notes throughout the range. This one features a very high proportion of first-fill sherry seasoned oak cask matured whisky at its core.
Nose
Decadent vanilla and orange, with hints of cherry and almond developing.
Palate
Still packing plenty of dried fruit notes, alongside crisp pear and a spicy touch of stem ginger.
Finish
Lasting sweetness of vanilla and pear, with peppery flourishes.
