Whisky #12
32 Year (Single Cask Single Grain - Old Particular)
Cambus

Scotland ~ 45% ~ $270

Though easily the oldest whisky we’ve had in 12 Drams history, that’s not the most interesting aspect of this expression. (We also don’t subscribe to the older-is-better school of thought) For starters, this is single grain whisky, not single malt, which means there’s no malted barley in the grain bill but rather a mix of corn, wheat, and/or rye. It was also distilled to a higher purity in Coffey stills, going into the barrel at upwards of 70%. Single grain whisky is most frequently used as a blending ingredient and therefore not typically sold in single-barrel expressions. And finally, the Cambus distillery has been closed since 1993 so it’s a pretty rare find these days. Thankfully BC Liquor convinced Old Particular to part with single grain casks from four distilleries to celebrate their centenary, including this gem distilled back in 1988.
